The Elders Long Ago
Ramon Anulay
This genealogy of a Subanen family includes an occurrence reported as common during World War II: a Subanen man's escape from his Japanese captors by rolling himself or his cargo down a hill.
1 The first time people attacked long ago here in the Philippines was back in the days of our ancestor Mateo. 2 When they arrived here on Mindanao island, those attacking wanted to capture Mateo and take him t their place. 3 But Mateo did not want to go with them, so they fought, until those attacking were defeated.
4 Now when Mateo had a child, his name was Anulay.* 5 This Anulay experienced the attack of Japanese here in the country of the Philippines. 6 When the leader of the Japanese soldiers found Anulay, then they captured him and made him their slave to carry their belongings.
7 From Engin, they passed through Petawag, 8 From Petawag, they passed through Godod. 9 From Godod, next they passed through bunawan. 10 From Bunawan, next they passed through Eight levels. 11 Now they were travelling nigh and day.
12 As they were going along a cliff, a very high, eroded drop-off, Anulay rolled down that drop-off.13 Then the Japanese thought that Anulay had died. 14 But he wasn't killed. 15 So that was Anulay's means of escape, and he was able to go home to his place, Engin.*
16 Now Anulay's siblings were Lakpaw, Edis, Lalag, Bandan, and Pamay, his sister. 17 And Anulay's children were Mogdin,* Esik, Dalima, Odial, Daria, Tring and Diang, who was the youngest.
18 Now the children of this Mogdin where Pedro, Entong, Sebio, Timbangan, Tagalog, Danilo, Ramon and Dolino,* who is our younger brother.*
19 We are the present descendants of our ancestor Mateo,* and we are helping translate the Written Word of God.*
